Alkanes are a form of hydrocarbons.

They all have the general formula of CnH2n+2

Different Alkanes make up normal Crude oil.

They are used as fuels becaues they burn easily.

Some Alkanes have isomers (all except methane, ethane and propane)

C5H12: Pentane

Substitution with Halogens[edit | edit source]

Alkanes react with halogens to form compounds such as chloromethane.

CH4 + Cl2 --> CH3Cl +HCl

This reaction must be carried out in sunlight or UV light.
