Glucose is created in plants during photosynthesis from carbon dioxide and water. Humans then consume glucose in food. It is used in our cells for respiration. The molecular formula is C6H12O6 and has a molecular mass of 180g/mol.

Blood glucose regulation[edit | edit source]

The blood glucose level is very important - as it is the main fuel in animals. Glucose is transported around the body in blood plasma. Cells in the pancreas called Islets of Langerhans monitor the glucose level in the blood. If it drops too much, glucagon is secreted - which makes cells take up less glucose from the blood. Sometimes, the liver cells need to break down glycogen into glucose if the glucose level drops too much, which is then released into the blood.

However, if the level of glucose is too high, insulin is secreted, which makes the liver cells takes glucose from the blood which is then turned into glycogen or fat, or sometimes use it in respiration.

Diabetes[edit | edit source]

Sometimes, a person cannot secrete insulin - this is Diabetes. This means that that Diabetics have to have insulin injected into there blood stream every day, in order to maintain their blood glucose level.
