Natural gas is a gaseous fossil fuel comprising of mostly methane (CH4), as well as other compounds such as ethane, propane and butane. It is mainly found in oil fields, natural gas fields and coal beds.

It has a variety of uses:

  • Power generation - used to power gas and steam turbines
  • Hydrogen production - natural gas can be used to produce hydrogen
  • Fertiliser - used to make ammonia (via the Haber process) which is then used as a fertiliser.
  • Other uses - natural gas is also used in the manufacturing processes of fabrics, glass, steel, plastics and paint.
