Sulphur Dioxide has formula of SO2. It is made when sulphur or sulphur containing substances are burned in air, this being part of the Contact Process.

  • Choking smell
  • Very poisonous
  • Dissolves in water to form sulphorous acid.

Acid Rain[edit | edit source]

Sulphur dioxide is the gas which is most responsible for acid rain. This leads to corrosion of exposed metals and buildings made of limestone. It can also damage forests by acidifying the soil, which has a bad effect on plants. There is also some nitrogen dioxide in acid rain as well.

  • bleaching agent for paper manufacture
  • preserving food (kills bacteria)
